Sound Art, 2/6 Entry

Today I explored the world according to sound for the first time. As a visual artist I am accustomed to navigating my surroundings and making observations with my eyes rather than my ears. I am instinctually attracted to visual information and eager to document accordingly. I am excited and relieved at the opportunity to learn and apply sound art to my art research, process, and product.

I started this journey upon venturing out of my apartment and recording every move using a hand held Zoom mic. I avoided conversation to prevent a verbal narrative to form, and instead relied on my movement and the everyday activities of the city streets to tell a story of their own. With a new audio-minded approach I noticed the overwhelming sound of traffic drowning out other more intimate sound opportunities. I made mental notes while the Zoom mic recorded populated streets with passing conversations due to pleasant weather, small movements and resulting noises made by signage on street posts, humming machines, footsteps, clinking dog collars, wind, distant sirens, construction, and the Kennedy Expressway fast approaching. I was able to capture street artists, children, and cavities of many different natures (tunnels, lakefront, empty rooms, hallways, stairways, outside, inside, etc.)

I chose to record segments of the walk as they seemed worthy or interesting and revisited the files later to name and prioritize. I look forward to manipulating the sound bytes using Audacity and Final Cut as applicable to my works in progress. In addition to these city noises I will continue to work with various domestic sounds in a more controlled environment, working A list of sounds/objects I plan to record are as follows:

Keys and change
Dishware
Silverware
Cooking/frying
Laundry - dryer and washing machine
Dishwasher
Bathroom drain
Chopping
Fire
Crackling paper
Speaking
Drumming fingers
Striking a match
Eating
